ST. JOHN VIANNEY AWARD: MADAME LAUREANA ROSALES

THE ARTIST BEHIND THE AWARD

     Presenting the first set of ST. JOHN MARY VIANNEY AWARDS would not have been possible if not for the skillful hands that re-created for us a unique image of our patron and saint. The busts (or statuettes if you may call them as such) of our patron are themselves priceless works of art, meant as well to most meaningfully underscore the equally priceless contribution to the Church of Mindanao of our first set of awardees.

     We contemplate these sculptures and artwork and remember the mystery of the Lord’s Incarnation. The spirit had been ENFLESHED. Analogously, we say: the Spirit of our patron, St. John Mary Vianney had indeed been enfleshed and rightly so, in our own context … our own indigenous color, shape and feature and as magnificently crafted by our very own Filipino and Cagayan de Oro artist.
     Accordingly, we hear our friend-artist saying: “a certain level of understanding the inner persona (of St. John Mary Vianney) guided me to translate his character into form.” Doing so, he found himself moving beyond stereotypes, the common art interpretations of the saint. Our artist blurts out with much amazement: “I saw him coming alive in my medium, as a real and warm person… a beautiful face!”

     The person behind this priceless symbol is himself a man recognized in his own field … as a sculptor, a photojournalist and an URIAN Awardee for Short Film. He partnered with internationally known sculptor Julie Lluch from 1990-2007 for works which include the monuments to Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., former Aklan Governor Evelio Javier, former Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson and former Vice President Salvador Laurel … all installed along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.     We are simply grateful for his saying “YES” to this project, more so as this entailed a lot of generosity on his part. We are glad enough to hear him saying that “the project for St. John Vianney had been personally a meaningful and fruitful journey” for him.

     We recognize the artist behind the symbol. We count him now as a good friend of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary.  We thank MR. ANTONIO “JOJO” SESCON, artist and sculptor for his creative rendition of our saint and patron, St. John Mary Vianney.

Two priests banned from celebrating Mass

Two clergymen have been banned from celebrating the Eucharist and collecting money in the Philippines.

Two dioceses in the Manila region have issued a statement warning Catholics of two priests who have been celebrating Mass and collecting money without permission.


Father Rufino Sescon, Manila archdiocese’s chancellor, said Father Romeo “Jun” Tena, of the Society of African Missions, has reportedly been celebrating Mass and collecting money at Manila’s Port Area.


“We wish to inform you that Father Tena has no permission from his society to celebrate the Sacraments,” Father Sescon said in a letter circulated in the archdiocese.


He said Father Tena’s superiors have requested that the priest not be permitted to celebrate the Sacraments in the archdiocese but have refrained from stating any reason for the request.


In a similar development, Father Benjamin D. Molina Jr., chancellor of Paranaque diocese also issued a circular announcing that Father Renato Frias has been prohibited from celebrating Mass.


The chancellor said Father Frias did not heed the “numerous warnings” prohibiting him from practicing exorcism, receiving donations and celebrating the Eucharist in private venues without the permission of the parish priest.


He said Bishop Jesse Mercado of Paranaque decided to issue the circular after receiving reports that Father Frias ignored the warnings.

Southern Philippine city urged to show friendship

Residents of Cagayan de Oro are being urged to live up to the “Golden Friendship” slogan that is attached to their city.
Archbishop Antonio Ledesma wants the people to be friendly especially to people of other cultures and religions.
He said it is his personal hope that Cagayan de Oro residents will become models of peace.

“We in the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro are very much involved in the promotion of the culture of peace and we are hoping that we will become examples of a true advocate of peace,” he told ucanews.

A study by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) showed 1,508 crimes were committed in Cagayan de Oro City during the second quarter of this year, 441 more than in the first quarter.
Physical injury ranks first in the list of crimes against person, with 163 recorded during the second quarter against the 156 in the first quarter. Rape ranked second, with nine incidents in the second quarter against 10 recorded in the first quarter, followed by murder (eight down from nine) and other homicides, up from three to four.

Archbishop Ledesma said the rising crime rate in the city, with many young people as perpetrators, is “alarming” and the Church must exert more effort in promoting a “culture of peace.”
He said Cagayananons have to work hard to stop conflict in Central Mindanao from spreading to Northern Mindanao, especially since the neighboring provinces of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur are predominantly Muslim.

Lanao del Norte is part of the Northern Mindanao region while Lanao del Sur is part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
